Albert “Big Al” Kassin; of Lake Orion; age 94; passed away on March 6, 2021. Al is the beloved husband of Elsie for 66 years; loving father of Vicki (Scott) Ernst; Mark Kassin and Kelly Kassin; loving grandfather of Kayla Ernst (fiancé Cody Bridgewater) and Jordan Waymer; and special great grandfather of Reina Mae. Al is also the dear brother of Jay Persich.
Al was WWII Army veteran under the command of General George Patton’s 3 rd Army. After his time in the service Al was a supervisor for Confection Cabinets (Indoor/Outdoor Concessions) in Detroit Michigan, and went on to own movie theaters in Northern Michigan and a vacation resort on Lake Charlevoix in Boyne City. In 1973 he and his wife Elsie moved the family down to Lake Orion where he became camp manager at Camp Franklin, the same camp he attended as a child. As a longtime member of the Lake Orion Lions Club, where he served as a Past President, he founded the Lake Orion Lions Visually Impaired Youth Camp. Later Big Al was a founding member of the Lions Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer. In addition to his involvement with the Lake Orion Lions, he served as the 11A2 District Governor, and received many awards for his work including the Citizen of the Month award in Orion Township. Al loved spending time with his family and would always look forward to traveling Up North, going to the casinos and spending time back in Boyne City. Big Al was a friend to so many and he will be dearly missed by all those who knew him for his big heart and unending kindness.
The family will gather on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home in Lake Orion and will receive friends for visitation from 1 to 5pm. Interment at a later date will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lions Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer.
