Barbara died on November 13, 2017 of complications from Alzheimer’s in her home in Enfield, NH. Barbara was born September 20, 1937 in Pontiac, Michigan to Ralph and Stella Schwalm. On July 21 st 2018 (Saturday) at 12:15 she will be interred at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Pontiac, MI after a gathering at the Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home beginning at 11:00 AM on the 21 st . She was previously remembered at a Memorial Service in Southport CT in December 2017 and a small service in Enfield, NH in November 2017.
She spent early life with her parents and brother, Jim in Pontiac until she went to college at Eastern Michigan University, where she was introduced to David Ward. They married in Michigan in September 1958 and returned to graduate school at Dartmouth in NH. After a brief stay in California, they settled in Orchard Lake, MI to raise their five kids, who are now spread out across the country. They left Michigan with David’s job transfer and settled in Southport, CT where Barbara enjoyed singing in the choir at the Southport Congregational Church, working at the Fairfield Women’s Exchange and time in her gardens. Barbara’s passion and focus in life was her husband and raising five healthy children. Upon retirement Barbara and David settled on Lake Mascoma in Enfield where they enjoyed their antique boat, Marjorie, and David volunteers at the Shaker Museum. She is survived by her husband and five children, twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren; Lisa Zappala of Needham MA (husband Tom and two grandchildren), Jerady Zunno of Grayling, MI (husband Darren, two grandchildren), Steve Ward of Avondale, AZ (wife Lorri and five grandchildren), David Ward Jr of Darien, CT (wife Wendy and three grandchildren) and Kathe Couch of Ludlow, VT, (husband Alan and their four pups). She is predeceased by her parents and brother Jim.
