Cecil Jackson Spearin

Cecil Jackson Spearin, age 92, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife, Doreen (nee Brynelson), his son Roderick (Sally) and their children, Jeffrey and his wife, Megan, Reid, and Molly; his daughter Kathryn (James) Hurst and their children Laura and Michael; his son John (Robin) and their children Jackson and Everett; and his sister Edith Bradt. Born on November 27, 1918 on his family farm in Pettapiece, western Manitoba, his early years were spent with his brothers Reid, Ken, and Doug, and his sister Edith.As a young man he joined the Canadian Navy as part of a special group, the Raleighites, which were recruited for officer training in the British Royal Navy. During WWII, he served as a Sub-Lieutenant in the North Atlantic and in the Mediterranean, when his ship, H.M.S. Havock was run aground attempting an escape to the U.K. after being damaged in a convoy run to Malta. Cecil was an internee at Laghoat, Algeria which was under the control of the Vichy French. He was released November 14, 1942 as the Allies invaded North Africa. After the war, he attended the University of Manitoba and became a Chartered Accountant. Cecil began his career at Ford Motor Company in the parts depot in Winnipeg. He met Doreen at Ford and they married in 1953. Cecil's career included many foreign assignments which during the 50s and 60s took his family to Singapore, Bermuda, and Athens, Greece. He loved traveling, sailing, and golf. After retiring from Ford, he and Doreen moved to Calabash, North Carolina where they enjoyed golfing, and entertaining family and friends for 22 years. He and Doreen returned to Michigan in recent years to be closer to their children. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary's in the Hills Episcopal Church 2512 Joslyn Court Lake Orion, MI 48360.Arrangements are being handled by Sparks Griffin Funeral Home in Lake Orion, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at St. Mary's in the Hills Episcopal Church 2512 Joslyn Court Lake Orion, Michigan 48360.
