Dolores E. Hancock

Dolores Elaine Hancock passed into the hands of her Lord on September 13, 2026. She was 87 years old and died at the Neighborhoods of White Lake, where she had resided since February.

Dolores was born on October 30, 1938, in Wayland, Michigan, to John and Irene (née Thornton) DePauw. She was the middle child and only sister to her older brother Leonard "Jack" and younger brother John. Their childhood home was in Pontiac, Michigan. A proud member of the renowned Pontiac High School Band and prodigy of its director, Dale Harris, she graduated with honors from PHS in 1956. After graduation she attended Midwestern Bible College in Pontiac, Michigan and worked as a bookkeeper for Grinnell Brothers Music House. She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church, also in Pontiac, where she met her husband, James Robert "Bob" Hancock. They were married there on May 26, 1962.

Dolores and Bob raised their four daughters: Rebecca "Becky", Elizabeth "Beth", Robyn and Rachelle "Shelley" in a lovely lakefront home on White Lake. She was a talented seamstress, making many beautiful clothes including Prom, Homecoming and Wedding dresses for her friends, her girls and, later, her grandchildren. She was a dedicated volunteer in the church and school communities, especially supporting the music programs of both.

When her daughters were in their teens, she returned to school and, again, graduated with honors, this time from Oakland Community College's Medical Assistant program. She worked for many years in the field, specializing in billing, where she had great success collecting unpaid insurance claims.

In her "empty nest" years she renewed her musical vocation, singing, alongside her daughter Becky, in local community choir groups including the Oakland Community College Chorus, Langsford Singers, Renaissance Voices and Vanguard Voices. She became a member of the jazz ensemble, Tradin' Fours, and auditioned for and performed with the Women's National Choir at the American Choral Directors' Association National Convention in San Antonio, Texas. In 1994, the Tradin' Fours Great Britain Tour elevated her musical career to international status. The time spent with her choir "family" was a source of immense fulfilment and happiness.

Being "Grammy" to Cullen (Pimnipa Kangsanan) O'Keefe, Kieran O'Keefe, Kieth Robert Duprey, Colby (Hannah) McCrum, Alexander McCrum, Quinlan O'Keefe, Caolinn "Keely" O'Keefe, Haleigh McCrum, Isabella McCrum and Morgan Gross was the source of great pride and joy. Her love and care for them was a blessing. Colby and Hannah will welcome her first great-grandchild, baby boy McCrum in December.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, John and Irene DePauw, her brother, Leonard DePauw, her daughter, Elizabeth Hancock, her grandson, Alexander McCrum and her son-in-law, Ralph Bucata. She is survived by her brother, John (Kay) DePauw, daughters Rebecca Bucata, Robyn (Brian) O'Keefe and Rachelle (Christopher) McCrum and her many beloved grandchildren, cousins, neices and nephews.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the fellow residents and staff of the Neighborhoods of White Lake for their companionship and care during her seven month residency and to St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate guidance through the end of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or Vanguard Voices (payable to "Vanguard Voices" c/o Kevin Dewey, 15801 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI, 48126)

The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 4:00-8:00 pm at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Pontiac Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 11:00 am with a family hour starting at 10:00 am at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home. A luncheon will follow the service at The Iroquois Club, 43248 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302.
