Frank Arthur Whiton; of Orion, Michigan; passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, February 21, 2022 after a four year battle with lung cancer. Frank is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara (Avery) Whiton; daughters Jessica (Bill) Whiton and Stephanie (Ryan) Whiton; and two grandchildren, Barrett and Adrian Staples. He is also survived by his mother Donna Whiton; four sisters, Susan (Vern) Whiton, Pat (Tom) Lucas, Nancy Wild and Doreen (Randy) Abling; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was born on November 8, 1951 in Adrian, MI; graduated from Adrian High School, and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. A retired automotive engineer from GM, it was said, and is true, that there was nothing mechanical that he couldn’t fix, he was an engineer to his core. Over the years he held a variety of positions including lead engineer for GM racing on the Cobalt SS program and crew chief for CKS Motorsport until his retirement from GM in 2016 as a Performance Engineer - Advanced Vehicle Dynamics. Passionate about “go fast cars” he spent his spare time building and racing his own cars and he and his wife worked together as scrutineers for local SCCA events and the U.S. Formula 1 racing. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 from 4-7pm at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Lake Orion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
