Fred Lewis Sartell of Waterford, MI passed away on April 11, 2022 at the age of 91. Fred was born in May of 1930 in Pontiac, MI and lived the majority of his life in Pontiac and Waterford, wintering in New Port Richey, FL for many years. He is survived by his wife Norma (Sparkman), his three children; Karen Sartell of Las Vegas, NV, Daniel (Debbie) Sartell of Rochester Hills, MI, and Laura Sartell of Sterling Heights, MI, six grand-children; Jessica Vandebroek (Jake) Dale of San Francisco, CA, Jason (Kristie Griffith) Walsh of Eastpointe, MI, Daniel (Amandalea) Walsh of Leesville, LA, Fred (Danielle Garman) Walsh of Waterford, MI, Jennifer (Jared Palmer) Sartell of Arlington, TX, Rachael (John Fuller) Sartell-Fuller of Arlington, TX, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Fred is predeceased by his parents Dorothy (Beard) and Marquis Sartell, his first wife Laurine (Latham) Sartell and his brother M. Robert Sartell.
Fred had a brief stint in the US Army at age 16. After entering basic training in 1946, his underage status was discovered and he was honorably discharged.
Fred finished high school and began working at Fisher Body in the production line in 1949. Within a few years he entered and completed the apprentice journeyman program and then became a tool and die maker. He became a production engineer in 1960 and kept that position until his retirement in 1983. He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and for years as a Marshall at the Buick Open. Fred was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, Pontiac, MI and served in a variety of volunteer roles through the years including as deacon, trustee and elder. He was a member of Pontiac Lodge #21 F&AM. He was an avid golfer until a few years ago and enjoyed traveling the world, including many cruises. He enjoyed solving problems and built portions of three homes. He was able to fix most anything that needed repair and he also worked on cars in his younger years, including rebuilding the engine of a VW just to see if he could.
The Rev. Laura Kelsey will officiate the funeral service held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 12 noon at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Pontiac, MI. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Internment will take place at Perry Mount Park Cemetery, Pontiac, MI immediately following.
