George Montgomery Newton, age 80; of Waterford; died August 21, 2006. He was born July 11, 1926 in Evanston, Illinois. After graduating from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, he joined the Merchant Marine Corp. where he served on tankers and freighter during WWII. He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy with a B.S. On returning from the service he married Kathryn Huth in 1948 and after moving to Michigan and working for the Philip Carey Mfg. Co. he formed GM Newton Co., now named Crane Roofing. He was active in the Boy Scouts when his sons were young and was an avid skier most of his life. He was awarded his National Ranking after 25 years of service in the National Ski Patrol. He enjoyed sailing and flying, having earned his instrument ticket. He was also an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir for many years. Besides his wife of 58 years, he is survived by sons George and his wife Anne of Commerce Township, Steven and his wife Marie and Richard and his wife Judy of Salt Lake City. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Jaime and McKenzie, a great granddaughter Ashley and a brother Robert and wife Yolanda. A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 114 S. Genesee, Pontiac, on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the Pontiac Chapel of Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Suggested memorials may be made to The Salvation Army or Grace Lutheran Church.
