Henry Sherman Hughes

Mr. Henry Sherman Hughes was the eldest son born on May 3rd , 1933 to the late Sherman Hughes  and Mary Togan  in Bakerton, WV. Henry attended Page Jackson High-School Charlestown , WVa. He accepted Christ at a early age and attended St John Baptist Church.

Henry moved to New Kensington, PA to become a Steel Mill worker. He married Odessa Brooks in 1952. In 1965 Henry moved to Pontiac,Michigan for a better life working for General Motors, where he retired after 41 years. He joined Messiah Missionary  Baptist Church under Reverend Cummings. He was a devoted member, former trustee and Mens Day Host.  In 1971 Henry married Jean L. Scott until her untimely death in 1983. In 2015, Henry married the Love of his life Carmencita Barbee.

He enjoyed fast pitch softball, The NY Giants, Lakers and of course The Pittsburgh Steelers. Henry was a member of one of the first Negro Traveling Softball league's.  Often telling the story of having to stay at the city jail because  they wouldn't allow his team to stay In the hotel.  He was also a member of a softball league in Pontiac, Mi. He loved his family, his community and church. One of his biggest joys was sending personalized cards to family & friends for birthdays and christmas.  Sending over 250 cards alone for Christmas! He was known for his Sharp Suits , Jewelry and Cadillacs. Henry was a proud member of the Mason's.

Henry departed this life on Monday, February 24th ,2025 at 11p.m. at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.  He was preceded in his death by his children Melissa Darnae Hughes and Henry Sherman Hughes. His Grandson Marquis Deshawn Hughes. Great Grandchildren Anthony Joseph McHenry and Zuri Hecht. His sisters Marva Harris, Pamela Twyman ,  Wanda Harris, Melissa Smith, Juanita Hughes, Sheryl Hughes and Sylvia Turner. His brothers Lionel Hughes, Kenneth Hughes and Reginald Washby

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Carmencita Hughes. Siblings James Hughes of Baltimore, MD.  Brenda Simmons of  York, PA and Deborah Washby of Martinsburg,WV. His children  Shermane Griffin (Anthony) of West  Seneca, NY.  Rhonda Blakey-Pryor of New Kensington, PA.  Valarie Scott of Imlay City ,MI,   Henry Hughes Jr. ( Angela) Garden City ,MI.  Sarah Hughes of Pontiac,MI. Stepchildren James Haymer, Garland Barbee, Latashia Barbee of Flint, MI. Jessica Barbee of Ohio.  Bonus son Bryant Dixson (Agatha) of Macomb, MI.  Mother in Law Florence Haymer of Flint MI. Father in Law William Haymer .  A host of Grandchildren  ,Great Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews & Cousins.  Special friends Charles York , The Scott Family and Mr & Mrs Willie and Marie Lee. And  host of special friends he made over the years.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Noon with a family hour starting at 11:00 am at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church, 15 Mark Avenue, Pontiac, MI 48341.
