John Francis Putman

February 6, 1960 — June 21, 2024

The lives of many forever changed when John Francis Putman died unexpectedly on June 21, 2024 while working in Appleton, Wisconsin.

John, a loving husband, father and grandfather, was born February 6, 1960 in Torrejon, Spain.

Prior to moving with his parents to Oxford, Michigan, John attended school in Birmingham. He was a 1978 graduate of Oxford High School and attended Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula before entering the workforce.

A licensed builder, John owned and operated his residential remodeling company, Putman Construction, for many years before joining Retail Contractors of Puerto Rico. Though he began as a contractor, John became a valued employee, cherished co-worker and highly respected Construction Superintendent, traveling nationally and internationally for whatever projects he was assigned, and most often, requested.

John was a proud member and former commander of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron #14 in Troy and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3926 in Clawson. He was willing to help when needed. When John was not at work, home or helping his daughters and family with their projects, he could usually be found as the life of the party at a local watering hole.

John Putman was a good man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and making others happy. His humor, laughter and smile will be remembered by all those fortunate to know him.

John is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Candy Ather-Putman. They were married July 15, 2000 and together cherished their daughters, Maria (Tyler) Colt, Kacy (Jeremy) Knapp and their grandchildren – Carson, Clover and Logan.

John’s passing also leaves an emptiness in the hearts of his treasured uncle and dear friend, Denny Putman, sister Christine Putman, first wife Suzie Howard, aunt Cynthia Byrnes, father Gregory (Joanne) Putman, multiple cousins, extended family and numerous friends including his special “Oxford Gang” buddies from high school. John was predeceased by his mother, Winnifred “Winnie” (Wilson) Putman.

A celebration of John's life was held at the American Legion Post #374 in Berkley on July 13, 2024. Family, friends and co-workers gathered together in his honor adorned in tropical attire (as John would wear) for hugs, stories, tears and laughter.

John's legacy of love, dedication and integrity will live on in the hearts and memories of those he knew and loved. May he rest in peace and carry on at a Tiki bar in Heaven for just one more until we meet again.
