José Alfredo (Al) Merle Jr., cherished Son, Brother, Uncle, and Friend, departed this life peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the age of 76.
Born on November 20, 1947, in Guayama, Puerto Rico, Al was the eldest child of José Alfredo Merle Sr. and Julia Muñiz Merle.
Endearingly known as ‘Nene’ to those closest to him—a name shared fondly with his sister, ‘Nena,’ from their childhood days—Al's life was steeped in love and laughter.
Born with Cerebral Palsy, Nene faced challenges that might have daunted others, but his spirit remained unbowed. To know him was to witness a profound resilience and an unyielding zest for life that inspired all who met him.
With a smile that could brighten any room and a warmth that invited friendship wherever he went, Al spread joy effortlessly. His passions included listening to music—with Marvin Gaye, Elvis Presley, and Bob Seger as his favorites; watching wrestling, a pastime he inherited from his grandfather; and being in the company of those he loved most.
Al is preceded in death by his father, mother, and younger brother, Greg Merle. He leaves behind his beloved sister, Damaris; niece and brother-in-law, Dominique and Dillard; and a host of extended family and dear friends who will hold his memory close.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Pontiac Chapel. A funeral service to celebrate Al’s life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 12:00 noon at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Pontiac Chapel. Immediately following the service will be the burial at Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills, MI.
