Malissa McNeill Brice, a retired school teacher was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Malissa's grandfather was James R. McNeill, who was a cabinet maker and in the undertaking business for one hundred and fifty years, which was the only one for whites or blacks. His influence was pivotal in locating the State Teacher's College in Fayetteville. Because of her roots, she was encouraged to further her education after high school. Malissa matriculated at Fayetteville, North Carolina, Teacher's Normal, Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia and Howard University, Washington D.C. She earned her Master's Degree from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. She is a member of the Phi Lambda Theta Honorary Society.Like her grandfather, Malissa was a trail blazer. She became the first African-American teacher hired in Pontiac during the early 1950's and was the first teacher in Pontiac to hold a Master's Degree.Malissa was involved in community service and dedicated to working to make a difference in the lives of others. Some of her activities included: past Board Member of the Y.W.C.A., Pontiac Area Urban League, United Way and All Saints Episcopal Vestry.Malissa's community involvement expands into many areas. Much of her time, effort, talents and resources have been spent as a Gray Lady at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, a volunteer at the Women's Survival Center, the Light House and the Baldwin Avenue Shelter.Pontiac General Hospital has been a special recipient of Malissa's services. She has been the past First Vice President of the Auxiliary at Pontiac General Hospital, has served as a chairperson of the nominating committee and as a member of the scholarship committee. As a dedicated and committed volunteer, she was chosen chairperson of the Southeast District of Michigan Association for Hospital Auxiliaries. In addition, Malissa worked as a volunteer patient representative.Malissa was also associated with the Pontiac Area Association of Retired Personnel, the Tuesday Musicale, All Saints Altar Guild and the Light House Building Fund.Malissa is survived by her daughter Ruth Brice-CurtisFuneral arrangements are pending at this time.
