Melvin (Rack) Helm, 82, of Lapeer, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, September 10, 2021. He was born May 8, 1939 in Bay County, Michigan to the late Burl and Retha Helm. He was the loving husband to Peggy Helm for 64 years.
He served in the United State Air Force as a Private First Class from 1956 to 1960. After his faithful service to our country, he worked at General Motors Fisher Body Division and BOC Orion Assembly until he retired in 1991. Upon retirement, he served as a retiree in the UAW Local 5960. He also worked at Standard Oil as a full-serve gas station attendant.
Melvin was a family man who enjoyed spending time with loved ones. He loved to pull his camper to take his family camping and teach them the simple pleasure of relaxing around a campfire and enjoying nature. He was a man who loved classic cars, and especially his own '57 Chevy. He often talked about the trophies he won at the Dream Cruise and other classic car events. Melvin loved to remember adventures from when he was young, and no matter how old he was on the outside, you could always see there was a young man still living inside of him. He loved family reunions and was always there to help others before helping himself.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Helm; their four children, Rick (Teresa) Helm, Randy (Nancy) Helm, Rusty (Lenise) Helm and Vicky Helm; eight grandchildren; Scott, Bridget, Mathew, Jacob, Austin, Ashlyn, Adam and Justina and four great grandchildren; Athena, Darren, Brooklyn, and Hunter. He is survived by his sister, Madeline Wynegar and eight half brothers and sisters. He is preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Fournier and four half brothers and sisters.
