CHILKOTT, Rev.RICHARD A.; age72; of Auburn Hills;died in Pontiac onAugust 25, 2006.Survived by Dorothy,his wife of 49 years;children Gretchen, Woodbery,MN, Paul, Waterford Twp., andAndrea (Kevin) Sheys of Be-thesda,MD; grandchildrenLaura and Karen Sheys andSebastian Chilkott; sister Nan-cy(Dick) Smith of Wethers-field,CT; and many other rela-tives.Dick was born in NewBritain, CT and educated atNewington High School in Con-necticut,Norwich University inVermont and received hisbachelor's degree at GustavusAdolphus College, St. Peter,Minnesota in 1956. He receivedhis divinity degree at Augusta-naSeminary, Rock Island, Illi-noisin 1960. After ordinationhe served as mission developerand first pastor at AscensionLutheran Church in Kentwood,Michigan. From 1962 to 1964he served as associate pastor ofSamuel Lutheran Church inMuskegon. From 1964 to 1971he served as pastor of Christthe Redeemer LutheranChurch in Adrian. While therehe was a member of Kiwanis,worked with Michigan MigrantMinistry and taught religionp a r t -t i m e b o t h a t S i e n aHeights College and at AdrianCollege. In 1971 he and hisfamily moved to Pontiac Town-ship,which was incorporatedas Auburn Hills in 1983. Heserved the Gloria Dei LutheranChurch congregation for 28years and retired from activeministry in June 1999. Afterretirement he continued topreach on Sundays in severaldifferent Lutheran churchesand one Episcopal church. Hewas devoted to serving the Pon-tiacarea community. He wasinvolved with Pontiac Ecu-menicalMinistry and was amember of ten different Au-burnHills city committees overthe years. In 1994 he was ap-pointedto the City Council andwas elected to a two-year termin November 1995. He regular-lyworked at election precinctsafter retirement. Richard par-ticipatedin the dedication cere-monyof the Auburn Hills Com-munityCenter on his 72ndbirthday, May 6, 2006. On Au-gust17, 2006, he attended ameeting of the Joint PlanningCommission/Tax Increment Fi-nanceAuthority. Sadly, thiswas his last public act. Richardwas a man of many talents.While living in Adrian he per-formedin several communitytheater productions at CroswellOpera House and SienaHeights College. Richard lovedto sing and his magnificenttenor voice touched everyonewho heard it. He was a proudmember of the Jackson Choralein the 1970s and in 1999 hejoined the Detroit Swedish ArpiMale Chorus and sang withthem until his death. Membersof this chorus will sing at hisMemorial Service. Visitationwill be on Thursday, August 31from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9p.m. at the Pontiac Chapel ofSparks-Griffin FuneralHome, located at 46 WilliamsStreet in Pontiac. A MemorialService will be held on Friday,September 1 beginning at 11a.m. at Gloria Dei LutheranChurch, 2600 Pontiac Road,Auburn Hills, MI 48326. Bish-opJohn Schreiber and PastorFredrick Gross will officiate. Alight luncheon will follow theservice. The family requestsmemorial contributions insteadof flowers. Contributions maybe directed either to Gloria DeiLutheran Church or to the Au-burnHills Community Center,1827 N. Squirrel Road, AuburnHills, MI 48326.
