Richard "Dick" Callam

Richard “Dick” James Callam, 86, of Independence Village of Oxford, Michigan went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 25, 2021.  He was born in Bay City, Michigan April 14, 1935.  He was the son of Gordon and Zela (Clark) Callam and was the second of three children.  He married his high school sweetheart Dorothy “Dot” Carroll in 1954.  They were married 61 years. Dot preceded him in death in 2015.

Dick was a firefighter for the City of Birmingham, Michigan fire department for 34 years.  He also owned his own drapery installation business.  He was employed by JB Hunt and drove for several years.  After his retirement, he and Dot moved to Traverse City where he drove for a limousine company.   He was able to enjoy several years “up north” playing golf, meeting with friends at the local coffee shop, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dick loved people, singing, playing his ukulele, and telling jokes.  He was a great story-teller.  He also loved the water of Grand Traverse Bay and enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida. He spent his later years driving for Uber.

Dick is survived by his 4 daughters, Diane (Don) Wright, Denise (John) Swanson, Deborah (Ray) Wilson and Rebecca (George) Ghazal), 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, his sister Pamela Johnson, sister-in-law Judy (Robert) Rinck and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, and brother Jack Callam, sister- in- law Georgina, sister- in- law Burnette Friedrich and brother-in-law Paul H. Johnson.

In honoring his wishes there will be no service.  The family would like to thank the caregivers for the exceptional care given to our father.  The Sparks- Griffin Funeral Home is assisting with burial of cremated remains and condolences may be posted via the link above.
