It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Rosendo “Russ” Garcia, a beloved local musician who lived a long, interesting, and loving life. He passed away on March 11th, 2023. Russ is the beloved husband of 48 years to Elena Garcia, who preceded him in death on December 18th, 2010; Dear father of Laura Bradacs of FL, Rosanna Minic (Mark) of OH, and Carmela (Robert) Gallagher of OH; loving grandfather of Selena, Ava, and Mya; and cherished brother of Jovita Alvarado and Martha Garcia. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maria Elena and grandchildren, Hope, Shane, and Jason; and siblings, Victoria, Guillermo, Ascension (Tilo), Esteban, Mark and Israel.
Russ was born in Pontiac, Michigan, the youngest son of 9 of Jose and Cleofas Garcia. He developed a passion for music and dancing at a young age and began playing the piano and guitar. As he grew up, he became more involved in the local music scene, which he was a great dancer and eventually forming his own band, Rosendo Garcia y Sus Blue Notes. After high school, Rosendo served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Greenland.
In his working life, he started at GMC Truck and Coach on August 18, 1952 and was there for 47 years. However, Russ continued his pursuit of his passion for music, playing at countless local events and venues, including family members weddings. He soon earned a reputation as one of the most talented musicians in the area after having learned to play the drums, saxophone, and bass guitar along with his charismatic vocals and leadership. His performances were notoriously lively and energetic, and he had a knack for getting the crowd up and dancing.
Despite his busy schedule, he always found time for his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he cherished his time spent with his band. He truly was the life of the party with a special gift of turning strangers into life-long friends within a single meeting. His friendship touched the lives of so many, often taking the form of a brother, father, and grandfather figure to many.
He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his unwavering kindness, and his love of life. He had a zest for living that was contagious, and he touched the lives of everyone he met. His legacy will live on through the memories he shared with loved ones and his love of music that he shared with the world.
Rest in peace, Dad, Papa, Brother and dear Friend. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you. We love you. Rest in peace and keep the music playing.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Pontiac Chapel. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Pontiac Chapel. Interment Perry Mount Park Cemetery.
