Shirley Sloan; of Waterford; age 87; October 21, 2012. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jerry in 1964. She is the sister of Joan (the late Frank) Sage; mother of five sons, George (Nancy), Gerard (Sharon), John (Janise), James (Monica), and Joe; grandmother of 11; and great-grandmother of seven. Shirley graduated from St. Theresa's High School in Detroit and later in life finished both her Bachelor and Master's degree in Education from Wayne State University. With her support and encouragement all of Shirley's five sons received their college degrees. She worked for the Government during World War II and there she met her future husband Jerry. She taught elementary school in Taylor for over 20 years before retiring. Amazingly, she became an airplane pilot and co-owner of a plane when she was still a teenager. Shirley enjoyed traveling around the world, playing tennis, golf and aerobics, doing charitable work and celebrating life with her family and her many friends. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 2700 Waldon Road, Lake Orion, 48360. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at SPARKS-GRIFFIN FUNERAL HOME, Lake Orion. Interment Holy Selpulcre Cemetery.
