Thomas L. Long

March 2, 1925 — February 24, 2007

Thomas L. Long, "Tommy"; age 81; went to be with the Lord February 24, 2007. Tommy was born March 28, 1925 in Rockwood, Tennessee, the son of Lee and Margaret Elizabeth (Wester) Long. Tommy moved to Pontiac after being honorably discharged as a veteran of WWII. Tommy served two terms, both overseas in action. He retired in 1981 from GM after serving more than 30 years, where he worked in truck repair. He was a devoted Christian. Tommy attended First General Baptist Church of Auburn Hills for more than 20 years. He was a Deacon as well as an Asst. Rev. to Reverend Milwee. Tommy leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 60 years Margaret (Moore) Long; one son Jerry (Thim) Long of Weatherford, Texas; three daughters, Margaret (Michael) Genella of Tampa, Florida, Bobiejo (George) Opalewski of Pontiac, and Nioka Newman (Ray) Crighton of Detroit; 12 grandchildren, Tommy Lee, Robert and James Long of Weatherford, Texas, Jason (Jessica) Long of Ferndale, Anthony-Vincent Genella of Tampa, Florida, Miranda (Ray) Speer and Jessica Rae of Waterford, Sara Elizabeth and Cheyenne Opalewski of Pontiac, Nikki Shabdue of Detroit and Austin Newman of Waterford; six great-grandkids, Nolan and Keira Long of Ferndale, Caitlyn Genella of Port St. Lucia, Florida, Caleb and Aiyana Opalewski of Waterford and Robert L. Russell of Detroit; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives. Special friends who were like his own, John Pena and Maria Lopez and their children, Juan Jr., Elysia and Daniel. Also, the guys from Lucky Autos (Marvin). Tommy also leaves behind his beloved pets Dixie, Lil' One and Smokey. Daddy's life was spent loving and caring for his family and friends. He would help anyone in need, never turning his back on anyone. He inspired and touched the lives of all he knew. He will be sadly missed by all, especially his daughter Bobiejo who cared for him thru the years until the Lord stepped in and took him home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pontiac Chapel of Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 9 and on Wednesday from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Interment Perry Mount Park Cemetery.
