DENZEL THOMAS SHEPPARD JR.; age 84. Known to family and friends as Tom, Mr. Sheppard died on June 22, 2011 at home following a lengthy illness. Born in Pontiac, Mr.Sheppard was the great-grandson of an immigrant Englishman who represented theUnion in the 1st Michigan Calvary during the Civil War and the son of a WWI veteran.After graduating from PHS in January of 1945, he joined the US Navy for the duration ofthe war and worked as a medic stationed in San Francisco. Mr. Sheppard married hishigh school sweetheart Doris Heinz, a union that lasted 45 years until Mrs. Sheppard'spassing. After living briefly in Florida, the newlyweds returned to Pontiac where Mr.Sheppard began his siding and trim business. He was a lifelong member of Elks Lodge810. An avid outdoorsman, he pursued his love of hunting at the Ten Gauge Club andwith friends near Mio. As of his fishing skills, a friend once said he was "Wanted by1,000,000 Michigan fish". Well liked and admired by many, Mr. Sheppard enjoyed socialgatherings with friends and family, and the occasional glass of scotch. In his later years he began wintering in Waikiki and was blessed with many warm friendships. He wasknown to be a kind and generous man who was dedicated to his family and gave freelyof his time and energy to others. Mr. Sheppard is survived by his daughter, Sally andher husband Tony Lobaza, and his granddaughters, Kate and Liz. Funeral services willbe held on Wednesday at 11 am at the Pontiac Chapel of Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, 46 Williams Street. The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Tuesday.
