Ulla Pratt

February 14, 1921 — November 25, 2020

Ulla Pratt was born in Pontiac, MI on February 14, 1921 to Peter A. and Athena
(Fotineas) Pratt. Both her parents were immigrants from Greece. She was raised
in the family home at 14 N. Edith Street with her brother and two sisters. Ulla
attended St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Mariva Street in Pontiac. Her
mother passed away when she was 16 years old and she took the role of family
matriarch caring for her father and younger sister. She worked for many years
as a saleswoman at Arthur's, a beautiful, upscale ladies and childrens clothing
store in downtown Pontiac. Ulla cared for her father until he passed away in 1975
at the age of 104.
She was a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She derived great joy
from taking them shopping and treating them to Cherry Cokes and Tin Roof
Sundaes when they would drop in to see her at work. She would take two buses
and the streetcar to Detroit to meet her sister and take her nieces shopping in the
“big city” for their school clothes. She regularly dropped by to visit relatives,
always dressed to the nines and always carrying a white, string-tied box from
Awrey’s filled with Cream Puffs or a Boston Cream pie. In addition to buying
sweets, it is said that she made the best pie crust in the family. This was quite
the challenge and accomplishment as all her siblings were pretty competitive
bakers. Ulla loved to babysit her young relatives, spending time chatting,
teaching them to dance, and playing the Greek card game, Kultsina. She was
fluent in Greek and loved teaching them to speak Greek.
Ulla was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the 1960’s and bravely faced it’s
physical challenges with grace and an inspiring positive attitude. She had a
sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor. No one left a visit to Ulla’s without
sharing a good laugh. She took special pride in being “Nouna” to her great great
nephew Mason Zabel. She will be remembered as a caring and loving person
and will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Ulla was predeceased by her brother George and her sisters, Demetra Nichols
and Mary Cosmos. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to St. George Greek Othodox Church.
