William "Bill" Powers

August 14, 1931 — May 12, 2018

William Davis Powers; of Lake Orion; age 86; passed away May 12, 2018. Bill is the beloved husband of Marianne for 17 years and was preceded in death by his first wife Diane of 41 years.  He is the loving father of Jim (the late Mary) Powers, Judy Powers and Donna (Raymond) Colpaert; grandfather of Kelly, Erin, Shannon and Jimmy Powers; great grandfather of Bodhi and Amelia Powers; brother of the late Ella Alsbury; step grandfather of Heather Grove, Katie Allen, Jason Hague, Samantha Keesling, Lauren Hague and Alex Hague; and step great grandfather of Alexis, Hailey, Ari, Jacob, Jolie, Abigail and Madeline.  He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, and family in Ireland.  Bill was a Veteran of Korean War and recipient of two Purple Hearts.  He later and for many years owned and operated Woodward Glass Co. in Detroit, and for several years was a volunteer police officer for West Bloomfield.  During that time Bill was involved with many organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Master, the VFW Post 334, the Ancient Order of Hibernians.  Bill was also active in many high school athletic programs.  At Our Lady of Refuge he coached football and at Pontiac Catholic High School he coached hockey, a program that he started and was so proud of.  He himself was a track star at Shrine High School, and in 2018 Bill was elected the Shrine High School Distinguished Alumni of the year.   The mantra of his life was “some people say the world is full of fun and frolic, and so am I!”  Bill was a good friend to many and will be dearly missed.  Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 11am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lake Orion.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3-8pm at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Lake Orion with Rosary and a Celebration Toast with the Ancient Order of Hibernians at 7pm.  Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice or to Mercy Supportive Palliative Care.
