Michael Sweeney

November 23, 1933 — December 9, 2022

Michael “Mike” Sweeney passed from this life on December 9, 2022, at age of 89.  Mike was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Judith Ann (Terrien) Sweeney.  He was the loving father of Brian Sweeney, and Kevin (Janet) Sweeney and loving grandfather of Dominik, and Jocelyn (Zach) Sinke.  He was born in Pontiac in November 1933 to the late Charles and late Florence Sweeney.  Mike, one of twelve siblings, is the dear brother of the late Charles “Bill” Sweeney, the late Marie Reynolds, the late Gloria Thurber, the late Patrick Sweeney, the late Margaret Denis, the late June Spear, the late Doris Ann Pennala, the late Charlene (Jack) Collins, the late Don Sweeney, Lee Ann Daly and Robert (Joanne) Sweeney.

Mike grew up and spent much of his life in Lake Orion, where he experienced the treasure of small-town living, and where everybody knew everybody. He served in the United States Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees).  Gifted mechanically, both his work time and personal time were spent on cars.  His work life began in garages in Lake Orion which led to the Ford Motor Company.  He also enjoyed building street rods and participating in car shows.  Mike met Judy, the love of his life, on a Friday night while crusin’ in his street rod and going for pizza at Pasquale’s.  They spent many happy years together cruisin’ in their street rods.  And they enjoyed hanging out with their car friends.

Mike’s lifelong dedication to Lake Orion led him to be actively involved with the Lions Club, American Legion, Orion Veterans Memorial, and Orion Historical Society.  He strove to honor veterans, help many people, and preserve Lake Orion’s history.  He served these groups in various roles including many leadership positions such as director and president.  He received many awards as well.  Mike was a proud American, Irishman, Detroit Tigers Fan, and enjoyed the 3 Stooges.

Mike was a very caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and he will be dearly missed.  The family will receive visitors on December 19, 2022, from 4-7 pm at Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home, Lake Orion, with a Rosary at 6 pm.  Instate December 20, 2022, at 9:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 715 N Lapeer Rd, Lake Orion until the time of his Mass at 10 am.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Orion Veterans Memorial .
